Valentines Day
I have mixed feelings about Valentine’s Day. As a single mum of two teens, I haven’t celebrated Valentine’s Day in the "traditional" way with a partner for years. For me, it often feels like just another day. Part of me questions why we reserve celebrating the ones we love for a single day each year. Isn’t it just a massive opportunity for florists, chocolatiers, jewelers, and card companies to rake in profits? And let’s not forget the restaurants squeezing in as many diners as possible for their $150-a-head Valentine’s Day specials.
But then again, there’s a part of me that loves the concept of the day. This year, I’ve been reflecting on what Valentine’s Day really means to me, where it originated, and how it transformed into the advertising juggernaut we see today.
Valentine’s Day History in a Nutshell
The origins of Valentine’s Day trace back to ancient Rome, where a festival called Lupercalia was celebrated in mid-February to welcome spring and promote fertility. As Christianity spread, the pagan festival was replaced with a day to honor Saint Valentine, a martyr who, according to legend, secretly married couples when marriage was outlawed by Emperor Claudius II. Over the centuries, Saint Valentine became associated with love and devotion, and by the 14th century, February 14th was widely recognized as the day of love.
Valentine’s Gift Giving through the years
Valentine’s Day has always been about love, but the way we express it has changed over time! From handwritten love notes to modern-day experiences, here’s a look at how gift-giving has evolved:
💌 Victorian Era – Love letters, pressed flowers, and sentimental lockets were the ultimate romantic gestures.

🎶 1960s–1980s – Red roses, teddy bears, and homemade mixtapes became the go-to gifts.
📸 1990s–2000s – Personalized keepsakes, luxury chocolates, and the first digital love messages.
